Mondo Hollywood

This is a “Mondo”-style movie, today this genre would be called “docutainment”. The subject is life in Hollywood during the second half of the 60s. With this southern California theme we get lots of surf-music along with some surfing and skating. I find the whole thing quite entertaining, and think it projects a vision of a town in transformation, when some people had other plans than becoming a movie-star or starlet.

If I’m remembering correctly the guitars are played by Davie Allan.

Here’s a playlist of 40 pretty random skating (as in sidewalk surfing) videos on YouTube. I never searched systematically. Obviously I find 60s and longboard films the most interesting, you don’t have to turn down the sound as much as with some of the hectic stuff.

1970s Skateboard Movie with Cool Music

Skateboard Sense is a safety film. The skating is stylish bankriding and nose wheelies and it’s just a great window into a time before skating was becoming more radical. So the action here could be from the sixties with a little shorter hair and clay wheels. Amazingly the music selection fits the skating style perfectly, the movie even starts with a nifty cool surf-instrumental that I didn’t know before. It’s a very competendly crafted tune. The other music is blues rock and slapstick/silent-movies oldtime music. A Sid Davis Production.
