Kurt Edelhagen Play the Hits of Jimmy Webb
UP UP AND AWAY
Regular blog-readers will realize this is the second release from the Boutique jazzclub series I am writing about here, the first was this.
Kurt Edelhagen & His Orchestra
soloists: Shake Keane, Jiggs Wigham, Rick Kiefer, Jimmy Deuchar, Karl Drevo, Heinz Kretzschmar & Bora Rokovic
Original recordings 1970
(some name dropping for the search-engines)
Kurt Edelhagen – that’s a name that is usually not mentioned in the same breath with Bert Kaemfert, Helmut Zacharias, Helmut Brandenburg, Werner Müller or Horst Jankowski. But this release puts him right among those fine 60s/70s big band leaders. And with a tracklist like this (the Webb songbook) the tunes match the stellar arrangements! Have you ever heard a bad version of By The Time I get To Phoenix? It belongs to the handful of tunes that can’t be harmed and are favorites of class acts. Taboo and Midnite Cowboy are tunes of that breed as well, for example.
And yours truly has been drawing those cover illustrations, putting the exotic guitar to the side for a bit.
