The island footage is of course Rapa Nui, or the european name Easter Island. Famous for its big rock statues called Moai in the native polynesian dialect. The footage is public domain and it reminded me of Thor Heyerdahl (author of Kon-Tiki) who wrote books about Fatuhiva as well as Rapa Nui. Fatuhiva is closer to the center of Polynesia, thus culturally closer to what has become known as Tiki. However in recent years (and in Heyerdahls days) the Moais have become icons of Modern Pop Tiki Culture. The Exotica style of this recording celebrates the mysterious, multilayered and obscure cultural sources, which are seemingly embodied in the giant stone idols of Easter Island. I recorded the track originally for the forthcoming DVD of Tiki.
