Hey KK - Interesting perspective. Being from the States, mine differs considerably from yours, but there is the a commonality among the influences. Melody delivered by wet guitars.

I started a little surf band in the 2000s because every guitar player wants to and never does. Also, no singing, or dealing with a singer, which is a plus.

Surf music is a form, you know it when you hear it, but almost any influence can be incorporated into it.

The lyrics of most great songs are pared down to poetic universality. Surf music is the ultimate at that, which presents songs that convey some feeling or meaning across language and cultural barriers.

When I listen to our home recordings, it is amazing how many countries are represented, including "Desert Bound", which, if I might say, would make you quite proud, it's a great tune and I'm so glad the Cowabunga collection included.

Carry on, KK.

The title had me worried because I think some of the hair-splitting about genres, especially surf, is infuriating, limiting and pointless, but (especially when regionally separated) I didn't find much reason to argue with this.

More importantly, I think your conclusion is right on the money. Aside from the fact that I don't dare leave the roll out of Rock & Roll instrumental, but I think the idea is solid. In fact, I think you could expand it past present day and say that the Surf phenomenon had enough extra cultural paraphernalia that the word carries a little more, oh I don't know, magnetism. In such a niche genre, you have to go with what gets the most name recognition (which, I believe, is your point)

KK, If your point was to explain the nuances between the different genres of instrumental music differ, than you did a fine job. One small suggestion, I'd have started the article with the 'surf' section, since that's what is the dominant form and the others are being compared to it.

Very nicely written article that describes very well the nuances of the surf instrumental genre.

I wonder what kind of responses you would get if you posted a link to this article on SG101.com?
