Unter der Schirmherrschaft der beiden deutschen Top-Surferinnen und ROXYRiderinnen Sonni Hönscheid und Carla Twelkemeier und in Kooperation mit dem DWV findet in diesem Sommer am 16. August der Girls Go Surfing Day in Hossegor statt. Der Event wird ein Tag von Girlz für Girlz sein.

Alle urlaubenden, deutschen Girlz zwischen Bordeaux und Biarritz sind herzlich eingeladen, einen Tag am Meer zu verleben:
Los geht´s morgens um 10 Uhr. Geladen werden die Girls ins Roxy / Quiksilver-Haus nach Hossegor, wo neben Surfers Breakfast und Kennenlern-Runde ein prall gefülltes Goodybag auf jede wartet!

Nach dem Surfers Breakfast geht es weiter mit entspannendem Yoga, um sich geschmeidig und gut aufgewärmt von Sonni und Carla coachen zu lassen. Surfclinics,erste Mannöver und eine kurze Einführung ins Wettkampfsurfen bieten die Grundlage für den späteren ausgefahrenen kleinen Funcontest. In lockerer Atmosphäre wollen wir versuchen mehr Mädchen für’s Wettkampfsurfen zu gewinnen und zu begeistern.

Wer Lust hat, kann sich beim Beachvolleyball austoben oder an einem professionellen Fotoshooting teilnehmen.

Nach ausgiebiger Beachaction mit Fotoshooting geht es dann gegen frühen Abend zurück zum Roxy-Haus, wo ein BBQ die müden Mädels wieder munter macht. Ob der Abend mit chilligen Tunes oder animierenden Beats ausklingt, bleibt den Mädels bei der Ladies Night selbst überlassen.

Sicherlich werden nicht nur viele nette Bekanntschaften, sondern auch unvergleichbare Momente zurückbleiben.

Lushy at Wassermusik 08, Berlin, Germany

Yesterday was a little calmer, starting with Coconami (I somehow missed snapping a picture of them, sorry!) who used to be in the Tiki Tiki Bambooos, a Surf band from Munich, they now are a Ukulele duo, with mostly female vocals. This has to remind me of Petty Booka, if just by the sound of two ukes and japanese ladies singing. Maybe a smaller venue would benefit their delicate presentation more, but on the other hand Wassermusik successfully aims at presenting a wide range of music styles.

Lushy – the most contemporary sounding act in the Tiki series of events at least, if not the entire set of Wassermusik events. It’s hard to compare Seattle and Berlin for me. However I can say that there is an artificial element, not unlike in the B-52s for example. Like a yellow plastic Tiki mask at Trader Vic’s, they stuck out of the set of Wassermusik performers by having said cartoonish lounge approach coupled with some electronics. I think this could be a really groovy thing, but probably working best with a dancing party crowd in a small club.

I had written a nice text about how I was introduced to The New Dimensions in the 80s. But I lost it trying out the new “Press This” feature of this blog software. It boiled down to the essence that any surf music fan worth his salt has to know this great teenage band from 1962.

Michael Lloyd, lead guitar; Jimmy Greenspoon, piano; Art Guy, drums, Danny Belsky, saxes; David Doud, bass; and Craig Nuttycombe, rhythm guitar.

The band never had any singles released. We worked with these hustler types by the name of Robert Hafner and Tony Hilder. They had a deal with a tiny budget label called Sutton to issue the New Dimension albums as ‘rack jobs.’ Essentially that meant their records would be pressed on cheap vinyl normally reserved for placemats, packaged in fairly generic sleeves, and shipped directly to the cut out bins with no hope of promotion, airplay, or royalties. We had three studio albums, ‘Surf ‘N Bongos’, ‘Soul’, and ‘Deuces & Eights’. We were part of a live album from the Santa Monica surf fair titled ‘Shake! Shout and Soul!’

I really enjoyed Boom Pam. The Klezmer influence has been displayed by Meshugga Beach Party from San Francisco, but they don’t have a tuba like Boom Pam has! A very enjoyable set, really, really good players, too.

I’ve seen the Bambi Molesters a couple of years ago when they still toured and had the other bassplayer. You can’t escape the dense atmosphere they create and have a really great guitar sound while doing so. They choose fitting covers and have written many beautiful originals. I don’t recall them playing so much on the edge of distortion like yesterday. The albums sure sounded cleaner, but it worked well with the audience the way they did it now.

Messer Chups from St. Petersburg had great melodies and were a sight to see. Notice the Betty Page lookalike bassplayer! I don’t think I heard them play one major chord, which is radical, while lacking the concept of contrast to keep things interesting… BUT they had a collection of snippets from b-movie videos as a stage backdrop, which put those sexploitation and horror flicks to good use.

La Popuna from Brazil mixed very varied influences, from latin american and caribbean dance music to punk, some surf and what not. Very entertaining, but demanding on several visitors of this event.

I recently became aware of this blog through a plug-in Jon developed, and was amazed by a similarly huge Doo-Wop playlist. When I left a comment there, he mentioned the possibility of a Surf playlist and here it is. You will find the player to listen to it right on his blog article and all the tracks are listed. Awesome!

Back To The Beach: The Surf Playlist – Jon Dyer’s Blog

First of all: it rained, so the two Surf shows and The Endless Summer projection took place indoors. The attendence was fair sized, could have been a little better, if outside sure some passer-bys would have joined the fun.

The first time I saw the Surfaris, and it was overwhelming. They cover the entire field of classic California Surf Music and each player added his personal style to great effect, especially Paul Johnson has to be noted here, a flawless player.

First they build a golf course and houses to ruin the dunes and now this. What is the world coming to? Is it only surfers realizing what’s happening? Probably.

Hi Wrecking Crew supporters!

Thank you for making the LA premiere at the Grand Performances a Great Success but if they missed it and want to send a friend, this is a great event. After playing to great response at SXSW, Buffalo, Nashville and Seattle Film Festivals (see reviews), we are very excited that “The Wrecking Crew” documentary will screen as part of the “Don’t Knock The Rock” Film Festival at the Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax in Los Angeles.

Join us for a beautiful tribute to those brilliant musicians who made some of the best records of our lifetime, yet rarely the picture on the record — now they get the spotlight. In fact, if you showed up to The T.A.M.I. Show Sunday night, you heard them, but you barely saw them — they were the house band for all those great acts. This evening is all about them!

A Q&A with Denny Tedesco will follow the screening and Boyd Rice DJ’s Wrecking Crew classics and novelties from Rodney Bingenheimer’s personal collection, while Kari French and her Go Go Troupe do the hippy hippy shake to Rice’s collection of rare 60s Scopitones!
